Statement: Freda Khalo's tumultuous relationship with Diego was such a complex part of her life I decided to do a collaborative piece with Chris as part of our "reflection series" that we have been working on. The reflection inside of the bowl is of Freda and Diego the painting is from a picture taken shortly after their wedding. The leafy background mimics a background of one of her paintings. The bottom of the bowl depicts the darker side of their tumultuous relationship and is symbolic of a quote by Freda Khalo -

"There have been two great accidents in my life. One was the trolley, and the other was Diego. Diego was by far the worst."

The painting by Chris Hopkins are the leaves painted in the interior of the bowl and the painted images of Freda and Diego painted in layers of resin. Jan Hopkin's contribution to this collaboration is the concept and sewn leaves and looped emblem of a broken heart on the bottom/exterior of the bowl.

This piece starts a new “Reflections” series of work that Chris and Jan Created together. We are excited about the possibilities of our collaboration which will bring an additional dimension to the work we have done in the past

Artist Statement - Jan: I hear the phrase “an act of nature” to describe the devastation caused by floods, tornados, hurricanes and other “natural disasters”. But, are the changes in our weather our interaction with nature. We view nature a force apart from us and struggle against it rather than being a part of it. This piece reflects a hope that we learn to become part of nature rather than be in conflict with it.

Concept: We contemplate the future for our children. A young woman is looking into a koi pond reflecting her future. Japanese associate koi with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Because of its strength and determination to overcome obstacles, it stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals. This is my hope for next generation and our future. I have wrapped the bowl with lotus pod tops symbolizing rebirth.

The concept for this piece is to celebrate the wonder of nature with all of the unexpected colors, forms and textures that are around us everyday but take little time to enjoy and appreciate.

An Extraordinary Friend of Fiber: Karen Johnson Boyd

Friends of Fiber Art International, together with the Racine Art Museum, presents a special exhibit of works from the collection of Karen Johnson Boyd, philanthropist and renowned collector. Entitled An Extraordinary Friend of Fiber Art: Karen Johnson Boyd, the exhibition features many artists including Dominic Di Mare, Carol Eckert, Diane Itter, John McQueen, Ed Rossbach, Jan Hopkins, Ai Kijima, Mary Bero, Dorothy Gill Barnes, Lia Cook, Kyomi Iwata, and Dona Look.

Karen Johnson Boyd is nationally known for her support of visual artists working in almost every medium. Boyd sees collecting as a form of communication between herself and the artist. She collects internationally, with an emphasis on American artists. Although known for her support of the ceramics field, Boyd has a long-term interest in fiber art. Her textiles collection represents most areas artists are currently working in such as sculptures, wall works and basketry.

“All Things Considered VI: National Basketry Organization Biennial Exhibition
